I’m looking out the window and it’s snowing at a rate of about one inch per hour. Happy Spring in Minnesota. You would hope that by April the snow would have stopped. I can ride in the cold but snow and ice just take all the fun out of it.

I recently purchased a new-to-me bike with heated seats and grips that should be quite comfortable in cool weather. I’ve been wanting a full blown touring bike after riding a BMW GTL last fall. The older I get the more comfortable I want to be on long rides. While the GTL is a great bike, the Triumph Trophy SE fit better with what I wanted to spend.

In a fairly quick online search, I found one at BMW Motorcycles of Richfield. It is a 2014 with low miles and was priced right. I rode my BMW R1200R over there on a rare, fairly warm Saturday in March. They gave me a great trade-in price and I got my touring bike. I left the dealership and put about 100 miles on the bike and am very happy with my touring bike decision.

MMM reviewed the 2013 version of this bike and from what I can tell it hasn’t changed much since then. It’s going to take me awhile to figure out, and get comfortable with, all the accessories but it will make for some great long rides. To read Dave and Guido’s review of the bike, click here.

I’ve only had two bikes that fell into the touring or sport touring class before this one. A Kawasaki Concours and a Harley-Davidson Road Glide. I’ve only got about 100 miles on the Triumph but so far it is more touring and sportier than both of those. Granted, the Concours was a mid-eighties model but the Harley was a 2006 and it didn’t have near the bells and whistles the Trophy does.

Last but not least, this bike is a color that works. The other day my wife and I were getting in her truck and she mentioned to me that my new bike was the right color. I had never really thought about it but I have a tendency to buy road bikes that are some variation of gray. The Triumph is Lunar Silver which is pretty much shiny gray. I take this as a positive sign, for all of my bikes that have been in this color family, have been great bikes.

I’m looking out the window as I finish this, and the sun is shining, the sky is a brilliant blue, and there are eight inches of new snow on the ground. C’mon man, it’s April!
