Whenever guests come into our home they seem a little surprised by my video collection. What they don’t seem to take into account is the fact that VCRs have been around for a couple of decades now and a person goes through a lot of changes from age 10 to 31. I own over 350 videos and I rarely watch any of them. The vast majorities are B-movie cult classics, cheesy horror films and foreign movies with subtitles. The older I become, the less appealing they seem. Once upon a time I made fun of Hollywood movies, especially chic flicks. With that being said, my friends will be surprised by this month’s video pick, “How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days”.

You may be thinking that this movie is far from a biker movie and defeats the purpose of this column. You’re wrong. I can not think of a better example of what I feel is an accurate portrayal of a typical male rider than Matthew McConnaughey’s character in this film. At least that’s true of the riders I know. He rides everywhere. I don’t even think he owns a car. He wears a helmet and makes his passenger wear one as well. In his spare time he works on old race bikes. He teaches his girlfriend to ride. And to top it all off, he is sexy as hell and has a good job! This is the image I have of riders and I was thrilled to see it finally made it to the big screen.

You’ve heard my rant before. The majority of the films I’ve reviewed have portrayed riders as hard ass, drug induced, heavy drinker gang members. I really appreciated the refreshing change. Laugh all you want, but I loved this movie! Kate Hudson portrays a journalist who writes a “How To…” column for a popular girlie magazine. She comes up with the idea to “lose a guy in ten days” as a way to show her girlfriend the mistakes she’s been making with men. Meanwhile, Matthew’s character is taking on a bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him in ten days. He is willing to put up with a lot more than any other man would in order to win his bet.

The highly exaggerated ideas that Kate comes up with to drive Matthew away are highly entertaining. They are both big Knicks fans. She sends him off to buy a soda in the final shot of the game. Another time she tricks him into thinking she has tickets for the game and instead they wind up at a Celine Dion concert. She even offers a degrading nickname to his private parts. The thing about Kate Hudson is that she is so incredibly flawless and charming that she could probably get away with such behavior.

“How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days” is a “cute” movie. While I suspect that may frighten most men away, bear in mind that the movie does star a beautiful woman and a motorcycle so there is no reason you couldn’t sit through it with your significant other. Unless, that is, you are threatened by her fantasizing about Matthew McConnaughey for two hours…
