Ack Attack Sets New Motorcycle Land Speed Record

According to a press release from Top 1 Oil, on September 26th, after five days of pushing their streamliner motorcycle to new limits on the salt flats of Bonneville, the Top 1 Ack Attack team achieved what it came to do: topple the existing absolute FIM motorcycle land speed record with a blistering 360.913 mph run. At 8:58 MST, team owner Mike Akatiff, driver Rocky Robinson and crew shattered the existing 350.884mph record set by Denis Manning and Chris Carr in 2006. The new record was witnessed by an FIM official onsite, but is still subject to FIM ratification.

The historic record was set during the first annual TOP 1 Oil World Land Speed Shootout taking place this week at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Mladin and Suzuki Still Disqualified

At the Virginia International Raceway on August 16-17, 2008, Mat Mladin’s #6 Suzuki Superbike was disqualified for having a non-stock crankshaft. Mladin had won both rounds of the Virginia event and Suzuki was expected to protest the disqualification. On September 9th, the AMA upheld the penalty stating “the #6 crankshaft differed significantly” from stock/production parts.

“AMA Pro Racing has provided this team ample opportunity to answer the simple question regarding this particular part, which is whether or not the #6 crankshaft is a stock/production part, similar to the sample parts provided by that same company, and whether or not this part was currently available to other riders or teams through their national dealer network. Nothing was provided by this company to support the position that the #6 crankshaft was a stock/production part, nor was any information provided that demonstrated that this part was available to any other teams.”

The end result of this is Ben Spies is the forth rider in the series history to win three consecutive AMA Superbike Champion titles.
